Spectacle, speed, excitement! There are three disciplines in finswimming: underwater, surface and bi-fin swimming.
Apnea: Underwater swimming with breath holding, which is held at a maximum distance of 50 meters, the competitor must swim underwater with only one breath.
Immersion: Breathing with a compressed-air sub-aqua equipment, which is completed at 100 and 400 meters. The competitor must swim underwater with the help of the breathing equipment, but only during turns is allowed any part of his body to rise above the surface.
Distances in competitions: 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 4 × 100, 4 × 200, 4 x 50 meters. In surface swimming, competitors are allowed to swim underwater only for 15 meters after the start and after turns. The rest of the race must be completed on the surface of the water, therefore one part of the body must always break through the surface.
Competitors’ equipment consists of a fin, goggles or mask, and a snorkel. The maximum size of the “dolphin” fin is limited, and the maximum size and minimum diameter of the snorkel are also regulated.
The same rules apply to bi-fin events as surface swimming, with the exception that competitors use bi-fins to do crawling style swimming, which significantly accelerates their speed compared to “classical” freestyle swimmers. In the youngest discipline of the sport, competitions are held at distances of 50, 100, 200, 400 and 4 x 100 meters.
